Instructional Unit

RIGHT TRIANGLE UNIT OVERVIEW:

In this unit students will explore right triangles and applications of the Pythagorean Theorem. The unit will start with a review on classification of triangles, and briefly introduce projections and proportions in the right triangle.

The majority of the unit will deal with the Pythagorean Theorem and some of its applications. The students will also explore two distinguished special right triangles, the 30-60-90 Degree Right Triangle and the Isosceles Right Triangle, and specific details about each. The students will also explore how to derive the distance formula using the Pythagorean Theorem and coordinate geometry.

For review, the students will have a review sheet to complete, and will be able to compete in right triangle jeopardy. An assessment exam will be given at the end of the unit. If there is time, the students will explore an alternative proof to the Pythagorean Theorem in Geometer’s SketchPad, otherwise the proof will be done after the exam.
